URUAPAN, Mexico - Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said he planned to work closely with the new governor of the western state of Michoacan, Salvador Jara, on security, economic and development issues.
The national government does not want to "create competition or establish another level of government" in Michoacan, where federal officials deployed the security forces in January to restore order in the Tierra Caliente, the president said.
The Tierra Caliente region, which gets its name from the high temperatures in the area and straddles Michoacan, Guerrero and Mexico states, has been plagued by a wave of drug-related violence blamed on the Caballeros Templarios cartel.
The federal government will work "shoulder to shoulder" with the new state administration, Peña Nieto said during an event on Monday in Uruapan, a city in the Tierra Caliente.
