On September 27, 2014 Mexico will be the global host of World Tourism Day, an annual event held by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

According to the UNWTO, World Tourism Day’s goal is to “foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals,” as stated on its website.

The 2014 World Tourism Day theme will be “Tourism and Development in the Community”. In 2015, Burkina Faso will become the host country under the theme “A billion tourists, a billion opportunities”.

Mexico was selected to become the host of this important world tourism day during the 10th General Assembly of the UNWTO which took place at the Victoria cataracts between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
