Two tropical storms - one of which has prompted a tropical storm warning for the southwestern coast of Mexico - continue to strengthen Monday in the Eastern Pacific, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Tropical Storm Elida formed Monday morning approximately 120 miles offshore of the southwestern coast of Mexico. Elida is packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Tropical storm-force winds (between 39 and 73 mph) extend outward up to 105 miles.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for areas of the southwestern Mexico coast, between Lazaro Cardena to Cabo Corrientes, according to the center.
Elida is moving northwest around 12 mph. This motion is forecast to continue with a substantial decrease in forward speed by Tuesday morning. A slow motion toward the west-southwest or southwest is expected Tuesday and Wednesday. On this track, the center of Elida should be near, but remain offshore, of the coast of southwestern Mexico, according to the center.
Tropical Storm Douglas, which formed Sunday, remains approximately 465 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, according to the center. Douglas has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving northwest around 9 mph. The tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.
Forecasters expect Tropical Storm Douglas to strengthen slightly during the next couple of days.
