MEXICO CITY – The profound and positive changes that the nation has undergone in the last 18 months can only take root in the long term under a strong rule of law and a solid protection of individual rights for all Mexicans, President Peña Nieto said Wednesday.
The president then promised the nation that his administration will carry out policies that guarantee those very aims.
Speaking at the Palacio Nacional during the presentation of the 2014-2018 National Human Rights Program, Peña Nieto said that although his administration has already received international recognition for its work by international organizations, his administration will continue to fight against human rights violations.
“The Mexican government remains firm in its willingness to cooperate with international groups working to protect human rights,” he said. “Joining forces (...) we will continue to fight with determination against unacceptable practices that violate the law, including torture, kidnapping and human trafficking.”
The president said that the federal government is committed to reinforcing the tools needed to prevent human rights violations, adding that any violations “must be investigated and punished.”
