According to Labor Secretary, Alfonso Navarrete Prida, social inequality has grown in Mexico. He explained that even though there are certain sectors in the country that are able to compete at an international level and have an increasing productivity, most Mexicans have not been able to join in the country's economic development.
Navarrete Prida gave a press conference by telephone from the International Labour Organization headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was attending the 103rd session of its General Assembly. He admitted some parts of the population suffer from inequity and have low income, and this has caused unrest among low wage earners.
He explained that it is critical to detach the minimum wage [about $5 per day] from the payment of fines, penalties and fees, so that it is no longer anchored to inflation. He added that the Federal Government is working on this issue and there are several proposals for the recovery and reversal of the 75% drop in the purchasing power during the last three decades.
