A wave of migrant children make the dangerous trek across Mexico to the U.S., as families flee poverty in Central America. Deborah Lutterbeck reports. (Reuters)

"It cost me a lot to be able to take a minor. It is very dangerous and it's been very difficult but with God's blessing we have arrived here. We have crossed rivers, we have crossed mountains. Everything's happened to us, we've been robbed. But thanks to God nothing serious has happened to us."

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says between October and May more than 47,000 unaccompanied minors crossed into the U.S. That's nearly double the number in the previous 12 months.

They leave home because they have run out of options.

"We left because there is no work and we couldn't go out and beg because no one gives anything. So, we had to leave to work and we're trying to go where God will allow us to."

As the U.S. economy recovers, the flow of migrants is expected to increase - despite the growing dangers of the journey.
