Little political participation and distrust of others and authorities are some of the characteristics of Mexicans, according to a study by the National Electoral Institute (INE) on the stance of citizens vis-à-vis democracy, which will be presented on Monday.

Entitled Country Report on the Quality of Citizenship in Mexico, the analysis was commissioned by the Federal Electoral Institute, the predecessor of INE. The College of Mexico participated in its preparation.

Among the data it contains, it notes that only 27 percent of people surveyed said that they trust most people, while the rest said otherwise.

With regard to confidence in institutions, the study ranked the Army as the organization with the highest level of credibility among the public, while congressional deputies, political parties, police and judges rank much lower.

The analysis reports a low public participation in political activities such as demonstrations, strikes, signing petitions or working for any party. For example, fewer than one in 10 of those surveyed claimed to have submitted or signed a petition. This value is lower than that recorded in Canada or Britain, and is similar to Latin American democracies and the U.S., it adds.
