NASA Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (Department of Defense)
Wi-Fi really is available everywhere - even, it seems, outside of Earth.
MIT researchers have been working with NASA since last fall to establish a Wi-Fi signal on the moon, according to The Optical Society (OSA). Thanks to four telescopes in White Sands, Mexico, transmitting a signal to a satellite orbiting the moon, you may one day be able to tweet about your space journeys from a lunar Starbucks.
According to the researchers, they have found a way to transmit data through the telescopes via lasers. The data successfully traveled a 238,900-mile distance between Earth and its moon at a rate of 19.44 megabits per second, comparable to a slower broadband connection speed, according to the OSA.
