Portugal beat Mexico 1-0 in a World Cup warm up thanks to this excellent injury time header from defender Bruno Alves. (Sport World TV)

Just as Mexico thought it was going to the World Cup on a positive note, Portugal defender Bruno Alves scored on a header in stoppage time to hand El Tri a 1-0 loss at Gillette Stadium on Friday.

Coming off the first loss of the Miguel Herrera era, a 1-0 defeat to Bosnia on Tuesday, Mexico appeared to be headed to an exciting draw against FIFA's fourth-ranked team.

But there was just one minute too many in the game for Mexico, as the North Americans were stunned when Alves scored on a header off a free kick in the 93rd.

El Tri finishes its four-game pre-World Cup friendly schedule with two wins and a pair of losses before leaving for Brazil on Saturday morning. The team will open its World Cup schedule against Cameroon on June 13.
