100 police injured in Mexico clashes (PressTV News)

Clashes over a controversial water project in the suburbs of Mexico City have left at least 100 Mexican police officers injured.

The clashes broke out on Thursday after residents, protesting a water supply plan in San Bartolo Ameyalco, a town in the Mexico City borough of Alvaro Obregon, put up barricades, set fires, and threw bottles at police, who had moved in to protect city workers.

The protesters also used sticks and stones to attack the police forces.

The villagers are angry at a plan to extend the municipal water system into the village. They say the plan is aimed at pumping the water of their natural spring to the sprawling apartment blocks, offices and shopping centers nearby. The protesters have so far been able to prevent authorities from implementing the project.

The Federal District Public Safety Secretariat, which deployed more than 1,500 police officers to take control of the area, said a hundred police officers have been injured in the violence. The secretariat said 20 of the police officers were seriously injured and were taken to different hospitals.

Several protesters have been reportedly arrested in the mayhem.
