Children and adolescents of African descent in Mexico are victims of marginalization, racism, and violence, warned the collective Afrodescendents of México, which called on society and state institutions to recognize and validate their historical and contemporary presence, as in their contribution to the development of Mexico. The lack of recognition, they claim, keeps these children and adolescents invisible and in the margins of society.
The NGO also indicated that municipalities with a significant population of African descent show rates of illiteracy and educational delay higher than other municipalities.
“It is urgent to include children of African descent in the review of the situation in which 30,000 children in Mexico live and of the legal and institutional framework that should recognize and guarantee their rights.”
They indicated that the acts of racism and discrimination this population faces in distinct public spheres, especially in education, have transformed them into one of the least protected childhood sectors in the country.
