Mexico is hosting the 5th Assembly of the GEF in Cancun, during May 25 to 30, the GEF’s governing body gathering that assesses policies, with a view to delivering funding and solutions for pressing global environmental priorities that include climate change and pollution.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF), an organization established by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), is the largest funder of projects aiming to deliver global cooperation for environmental benefits.
The latest of the every four year assembly gatherings follows on from record funding this year for the GEF to support efforts of developing countries over the next four years to develop environmental protections.
The GEF that includes input from 183 countries alongside NGOs, the private sector and international orgs recently received pledges of USD 4.43 billion.
Talks are expected to focus on initiatives that include the GEF’s-6 program that is increasing the share of resources to lower-income countries.
Mexico's Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Luis Videgaray, who will host the GEF assembly, says: "Only by integrating environmental considerations into decision making by governments, private businesses and households can we hope to make a difference in the global environment.“
