Dr. José Manuel Mireles Valverde (Gustavo Aguado)

MORELIA, Michoacán - Headed by José Manuel Mireles, one of the initiators of the self-defense movement in Michoacán, a group of activists and victims of insecurity, violence and impunity, have formed a new front in the struggle for justice and human rights during the government of Enrique Peña Nieto.

Called Self-Defense Against Citizen Insecurity and Impunity, the new front counts among its members such activists as the poet Javier Sicilia, who heads the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity [following his son's murder by cartel members] and Father Alejandro Solalinde, director of the migrants' shelter "Hermanos en el Camino" [Brothers on the Road] in the state of Oaxaca.

Its members, all nationally known for their social activism and for being victims of insecurity or witnesses of injustice, have coalesced around the figure of the self-defense movement that emerged in Michoacán in order that they might, without the use of weapons, take the fight initiated in Michoacán to the rest of the country, which is permeated by violence and a high level of impunity.
