The Mexican capital's Jose Marti Cultural Center has begun screening a series of films based on famous works by the late Colombian Nobel literature laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who died on April 17.

The film cycle began Friday with "El Coronel no Tiene quien le Escriba" (No One Writes to the Colonel), directed by Arturo Ripstein and featuring Mexican actors Fernando Lujan, Daniel Gimenez Cacho and Salma Hayek, and Spain's Marisa Paredes, Mexico City's Culture Secretariat said in a communique.

The film portrays the useless hopes of the colonel, a veteran of the Thousand Days' War, who Friday after Friday waits for the letter announcing the granting of his pension. Though everyone knows it will never come, he clings to his dream, which is all he has left in life.

The film cycle ends May 23 with the screening of "El Amor en los Tiempos del Colera" (Love in the Time of Cholera), directed by Britain's Mike Newell, which tells the story of Florentino Ariza, poet and telegraph operator who finds the love of his life, Fermina Daza, but must wait decades before they can share their lives.

The local Culture Secretariat said that with the death of the Colombian author, recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1982, "Mexico lost a great writer."
