MEXICO CITY – The Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding in a ceremony at Mexico City’s Teatro de la Ciudad on Monday, which was attended by Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera and Tabasco Gov. Arturo Núñez, among other high-profile party members.
During the ceremony, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano, who is considered to be the party’s moral leader, called on PRD members to maintain party unity and avoid another split in its upcoming internal elections. At the end of 2012, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who twice served as the party’s presidential candidate, left the PRD to found a new party called the National Renewal Movement (Morena), and many fear that the internal elections that will be held on September 21 could lead to another split.
Cárdenas Solórzano said that if the PRD continues to be divided, the party’s future will be a total decline and unstoppable loss of sympathizers. He called on Mexico’s left to put aside its internal differences and focus on common goals such as overturning last year’s controversial energy reform and blocking the telecommunications bill currently being promoted by President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Dolores Padierna Luna, deputy Senate coordinator for the PRD, said that, despite its current divisions, the party has left an indelible mark on Mexico’s political landscape and consolidated itself as the voice of the country’s left.
