Son de protesta frente al Senado (TVHorizontal)

“I like milk. I like coffee, but I like having the Internet more. I like Twitter. I like YouTube. But I don’t like their crappy attitude,” sang Diego and Bosque, accompanied by Mexican guitars (above) last Thursday afternoon outside of the Senate. This was where Internet users and citizens defended the Internet and the freedom they find there.

According to interviewed activists, the initiative of the secondary [implementing] laws in telecommunications and broadcasting presented by President Enrique Peña Nieto to the Senate is “the more important risk the Internet has confronted in Mexico” since they began using it at the end of the 1980’s. These secondary laws would impose limits and they would criminalize its use.

The youth are the main ones defending the digital space, the same way in the streets as with social media campaigns: writing blogs, with video, and tweets. It appears that the divide is more generational than digital.

“The Internet is very important for Mexico, because it is one of the few chances there is to exercise freedom of expression in a complete way,” stated Carlos Brito, one of the organizers of the march.
