HIROSHIMA - Foreign ministers of 12 non-nuclear powers issued a joint declaration here April 12 with a call for greater efforts to slash nuclear arsenals and visits by world leaders to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The appeal was made at the end of a two-day conference of the Ministerial Meeting of the Nonproliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) to propose steps toward nuclear nonproliferation. It was the first such conference to be held in this city, which, like Nagasaki, was leveled by atomic bombing in 1945.

... During the meeting, government officials are working to iron out their differences over the process to achieve the shared goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

Of the 12 NPDI members, Japan and six other countries are U.S. allies, meaning that they are striving for nuclear disarmament while still depending on the American “nuclear umbrella.”

But other members, including Mexico, are advocating more aggressive efforts, including a possible all-out ban on the use of nuclear weapons due to their enormous humanitarian implications.
