MEXICO CITY – National Renewal Movement (Morena) leader Andrés Manuel López Obrador was due to begin legal proceedings to force a referendum on energy reform in the Senate Thursday.

López Obrador will have to notify the senate of his intention to demand a referendum on energy reform, fill out the necessary paperwork and then begin to again collect the more than 1.6 million signatures required to begin the referendum process.

“I don’t know why they are so scared to ask Mexicans whether or not the want to privatize the national energy sector. We’re not even going to present it that way as a question,” López Obrador said. “We’re going to ask them whether or not they want to give petroleum contracts or concessions to foreign or national private companies, and it will be the people who decide.”
