The Secretary of Government Relations, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, admitted the “failure” of the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists and he promised to “restructure it” to comply with the duties for which it was created.
According to the general secretary of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Christophe Deloire, and the representative for that organization in Mexico, Balbina Flores, the head of SEGOB stated the above during a meeting held to address the “crisis of the Protection Mechanism” and the situation with journalists in Mexico.
In the press conference at the end of his working visit that started March 31 and ended April 2, Deloire reported that according to the last report by RSF, Mexico is 152 in a list of 180 countries with “numerous attacks on the freedom of press, as a consequence of the concentration of the media, the discretional nature of the distribution of official publicity, the violence against journalists, and the impunity that allows these crimes to happen.”
