Los Angeles Welcomes Special Olympics World Games 2015 (LA2015)
Long Beach is the first city in Southern California to be named a Host Town for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015, when more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries will descend on Southern California in July for a three-day program.
... Cities from San Luis Obispo to San Diego are also expected to host delegations for LA2015, which is billed as the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world next year, and the single biggest event in Los Angeles since the Olympic Games in 1984. Roughly 100 communities are expected to host delegations.
Each Host Town will welcome about 100 athletes — typically one or two delegations — during a three-day program that takes place prior to the Opening Ceremony, according to the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015 website. Events include getting to know community members, taking part in cultural activities unique to the Host Town area, as well as practicing and resting for the Games.
More than 30,000 volunteers and an estimated 500,000 spectators are expected at LA2015, which will feature 25 Olympic-style sports at 27 venues.
