Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil has taken its acrobatics-based shows around the world, but put down few permanent roots, notably in Las Vegas, where it produces eight separate shows, and Orlando, where it has one. Now the group is heading south of the border with a new theater under construction on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
Grupo Vidanta, which operates several resorts in the area, is building the stand-alone theater located about 10 miles south of the Cancun airport. Cirque du Soleil has not released details on the show’s theme, although a representative wrote that the production will “reflect the rich cultural heritage of Mexico, and specifically the Riviera Maya area.”
The new venture calls for combining dinner with the entertainment, with the former likely finishing up before curtain time.
The 600-seat theater is scheduled to open in November.
