MEXICO CITY - Mexican consumer prices rose modestly in the first half of March, bringing the annual inflation rate back within the central bank's target range for the first time since December.
The consumer price index rose 0.17% in the first two weeks of the month, slightly below the 0.2% median estimate of 13 economists polled by the Wall Street Journal. Lower prices for tomatoes and some other foods partially offset increases in limes and gasoline.
The annual inflation rate moved back within the Bank of Mexico's target range of 2%-4%, falling to 3.89% from 4.23% at the end of February.
Core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh fruit and vegetables, rose 0.11% in the first half of March, lowering the annual rate to 2.84% from 2.98%.
