Dengue vaccine study in Mexico (DengueInfo)
The incidence of dengue fever in Mexico has increased by 30-fold in the past 50 years and the increases in garbage is attributing to this increase, says one infectious disease specialist as reported on the Spanish-language news source, La Prensa.
In addition to the dengue being more lethal and aggressive, the health expert said, starting around 1980, with globalization, the fast-food culture that substantially increased garbage, construction in urban zones, and international travel have all been factors in the spread of dengue, and our country has not been an exception.
Dr. Jorge Méndez Galván, of the Mexico Children’s Hospital said, ”The real monster we’re fighting is the monster of garbage, because even when people know their homes contain mosquito nurseries like used tires and plastic containers filled with rainwater, they don’t believe that the larvae will grow into the mosquitoes that can send us to our graves.”
In Mexico, the picture has not been very serious, because most have been infected with one serotype (DEN-1 and a rare DEN-2), the problem will be when the majority of the population already had dengue, is inoculated with serotype 3, because then the problems of DHF will cause a severe problem for institutions health in the country, he said.
