Chris Guillebeau: What is Travel Hacking (travelhacking)

As a seasoned “travel hacker,” Matt Bailey has been all over the world while spending precious little money, but his current adventure he counts among his best bargains.

“This trip I’m on right now was a pretty cold hack,” Bailey, 29, said in a Skype interview from Mexico, where he recently married his travel and life partner, Karla.

When the pair returns to Calgary in June, he says they will have spent just $250 of their own money on airfare and airport fees, on a trip that included flights through major airports in Mexico, Colombia, and Bolivia.

Matt has been living and travelling like this since 2011, after reading an e-book by American author Chris Guillebeau (see video above) on “travel hacking,” and adapting the concept for Canadian travellers.

“The basics or the theory of travel hacking is the same for anyone but the deals themselves can be specific to each country,” Matt said.

... He blogs about his travels at LiveLimitless.net, and shares his travel-hacking techniques at CanadianFreeFlyers.com, a site geared towards people interested in trying it, too, but on a more casual basis.
