Former President Felipe Calderón (CNBC)
MEXICO CITY – One of Latin America’s top human rights activists has accused former President Felipe Calderón of judicial interference in the cases of people arrested as part of his war against drug traffickers.
James Cavallero, a member of Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, yesterday said that Calderón pressured judges to imprison suspects without sufficient evidence. Cavallero also denounced Calderón’s practice of publicly criticizing judges who ruled on high-profile cases.
“Preventative imprisonment should be done in exceptional cases, it should follow the principles of legality, assumption of innocence, logic and proportionality,” he said.
The commission says Calderón’s practices have led to a situation where 100,000 Mexicans, some 40 percent of the prison population, have not been found guilty of a crime.
