MEXICO CITY – The National College of Criminal Law Attorneys has filed a lawsuit against Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares and Enrique Pérez Rodríguez, charging that they aided the 2001 escape of drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán from the Puente Grande prison in Jalisco.
Jorge Reyes Peralta, president of the National College of Criminal Law Attorneys, has presented the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) with 175 files which he says prove the involvement of Yunes Linares and Pérez Rodríguez in the jail break.
Yunes Linares was director of crime prevention and social readaptation during the Vicente Fox administration (2000-06) and had appointed Enrique Pérez Rodríguez as director of Mexico’s federal prisons.
Reyes Peralta said that Yunes Linares authorized Guzmán’s transfer from a maximum security prison to the minimum security Puente Grande prison. At Puente Grande, Guzmán reportedly bought off prison guards, allowing him to enjoy immense privileges.
