MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto said on Tuesday that the new National Penal Code, which was approved yesterday, represents a historic achievement for the nation’s justice system.
Speaking from the National Palace, Peña Nieto said that there will now be one unified penal code covering the entire nation.
Since Mexico’s independence, there have been separate penal codes for each state. The national code, originally proposed during the Felipe Calderón administration, looks to streamline the entire judicial system and obligate each state to adhere to the same principles of justice.
Peña Nieto pointed out that there were 33 different penal codes in the nation, and that each one had a different way of carrying out judicial proceedings. “Now there will be only one code which will be valid throughout the nation.”
“This will be the first penal code to be produced from the consensus and agreement of national political forces represented by congress,” Peña Nieto said.
