José Mireles was at the head of the march of the self-defense citizens through the streets of Tepalcatepec, which were crowded with hundreds of people who left their homes and cheered him with chants of "The people united will never be defeated!" (elsemanario)

TEPALCATEPEC, Michoacán - One year after their formation, the self-defense groups of Tierra Caliente are confronting problems of unity following accusations against Juan José Farías Álvarez, El Abuelo [The Old Man], for his alleged links to drug trafficking.

In his reappearance in this municipality, José Mireles, former spokesperson for the area's self-defense groups, lamented that they have these problems and that some media are "demonizing" members of the self-defense groups. In the citizen self-defense movement, he stated, there is no cover up of any criminal.

Dr. Mireles was referring to statements made by Tepalcatepec's mayor, Guillermo Valencia, to the newspaper Reforma against El Abuelo, whom he accused of belonging to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación and of supporting the self-defense groups with money and weapons.
