Dengue is a potentially fatal disease spread by infected female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species. Bed nets are of little use because this species of mosquito also bites during the day. With no vaccine and more than 2.5 billion people worldwide at risk of infection, new methods to prevent the spread of this debilitating disease are urgently needed. (Wellcome Trust)
The states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Veracruz usually top the list of the Mexican states reporting cases of dengue. However, for the first time in many years the state of Sinaloa leads the list.
According to the Department of Epidemiology of the Federal Ministry of Health, through February 17th of this year Sinaloa has reported 1,045 probable cases and 166 confirmed cases of dengue.
This is over a 300% rise over the same period last year when only 48 confirmed cases of dengue were reported.
In addition to the total number of confirmed cases increasing significantly, the number of hemorrhagic type cases has also risen dramatically. Of the 48 confirmed cases reported in Sinaloa through February 17th last year 13 cases were hemorrhagic (27 percent), while this year 112 cases out of the total of 166 are of the hemorrhagic type (68 percent).
The other states rounding out the top five states reporting dengue fever this year are the states of Yucatan (165 cases), Jalisco (134 cases), Guerrero (115 cases) and Nuevo Leon (98 cases).
