Mexico places 152 out of 180 in terms of freedom of the press, which is on a similar level to countries like Congo or Iraq, according to the World Press Freedom Ranking Index published by Reporters Without Borders.

Of all variables, this index mainly studies the impact of armed conflicts on freedom of information.

“In a context of instability, the means of communication are strategic objectives and targets for groups or individuals trying to control the information,” said the report that was released Thursday.

Around the world, “sub-state” groups and organized crime are the main causes of insecurity for journalists.

Specifically, in Central and South America, the greatest risks for journalists come from the coverage of drug trafficking, corruption, and land or mining conflicts.

“In Mexico, the Zetas and other criminal organizations act in a similar predatory manner towards journalists, with the complicity of corrupt local, and sometimes federal, officials,” said the report.
