Mexican dignitaries have cut the ribbon at the first wind farm in the state of Jalisco, developed at a high altitude site by local outfit Grupo Dragon.
The 50.4MW facility known as Los Altos (pictured) features 28 Vestas V100-1.8MW turbines on a plot that lies more than 2600 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest in the Americas.
Energy Secretary Pedro Joaquín Coldwell hailed the development as a prime example of Mexico’s ongoing energy reform, and called on private companies to work in partnership to deliver government objectives.
“Energy reform has two levers: first, energy policies undertaken by the government of the Republic and the other, the efforts of companies like Dragon, part of Grupo Salinas, which owns the wind park.”
Coldwell called on renewables developers to “take into consideration the interests of landowners and local communities so that they also receive benefits”.
Vestas has meanwhile established a 50-strong regional office to carry out construction, maintenance, sales, logistics, legal and finance operations across Mexico and Central America.
