Last week the State congress for the state of Morelos banned the use of animals in circuses and opened the door for banning bullfighting, cockfighting and other forms of animal abuse in the future.
Circus performers and owners heavily lobbied legislators and tried to enter the state legislature in an effort to stop the amendments to the State Wildlife Act prohibition. Those opposed to the legislation not only took their fight to the streets, they also used social media to mock the legislative initiative.
The opposition’s main argument was that the legislation will remove a 200 years old tradition and leave countless numbers jobless.
While the state of Morelos was banning the use of animals in circuses, in the municipality of León, Guanajuato council women Beatriz Manrique and Verónica García Barrios held a press conference on Thursday where they explained that in order to protect animals they will be introducing an initiative to prevent circuses which use animals from performing in León.
Beatriz Manrique said, “This is about the care and protection of animals because circuses are sometimes the promoters of the black market in animals and it is also necessary to ensure the protection of animals, especially now that we are facing a crisis of the extinction of many species.”
