TEXCOCO - The three principal arguments of the agri-food multinationals for promoting the adoption of genetically modified [GM] corn in Mexico and the world are "false"; therefore, its commercial use must not be authorized by the federal government, declared experts such as Antonio Turrent, Amalio Santacruz, Fernando Castillo, Alejandro Espinosa and Adelita San Vicente during a recent forum at the Graduate School in Texcoco.
Promises that [GM corn] produce higher crop yields, generate greater environmental protection because they dispense with agrochemicals, and that GM corn is more drought-resistant are just "propaganda," declared experts at the forum organized by the Union of Concerned Scientists Committed to Society.
Genetic improvement of seeds, they said, can be achieved without GM technology by using traditional and scientific selection methods, as has been done so far by taking advantage of the rich biodiversity of the country's corns.
They even stated that the Mexican countryside has the potential to produce "normal corn" [not GM] sufficient to achieve food self-sufficiency and stop relying on imports from the United States. They note that billions of dollars a year have been lost [buying corn imports] that could be invested in supporting the national agricultural capability that has been "abandoned" in recent decades.
