Carlos Slim, the world’s second-richest person, forged a partnership with Coursera Inc. to translate online classes from colleges such as Stanford University into Spanish.
By the end of this year, Coursera and the Carlos Slim Foundation expect to translate about 50 free online courses. Subjects will include computer science, public health and leadership, tailored to Latin America’s employment needs.
“The idea is to take someone who is relatively low-skilled and give them the abilities to be eligible for a white-collar job,” Daphne Koller, a Coursera co-founder, said in a phone interview from Mexico City. “We are in it for the long haul, and so is the Slim Foundation.”
In the future, the foundation may also help students access the courses through digital libraries that offer free Internet access across Latin America, Coursera said in a statement.
