MEXICO CITY - David Herrera Martínez was sentenced to five years in prison after he tried to pay with a false 500-peso bill.
Herrera was a seafood salesmen in the Ocotlán, Jalisco market. Saturday, March 26, 2011, David went to a stall to buy a hat which cost 70 pesos. While paying with a 500 peso bill, the owner looked at it and realized it was false, so he called the police.
When the fake bill was detected, Herrera explained that he received that bill from a person who bought some seafood, but he was accused of the crime of using counterfeit money.
The fifth criminal court judge on Jalisco gave him a sentence of five years in prison in the maximum security prison at Puente Grande. A federal court issued a finding that the fact that Herrera was unaware that the bill was counterfeit was irrelevant.
The case of David Herrera is in addition to the case of Esperanza Reyes, who was arrested in San Luis Potosí after paying at a stationery store with a counterfeit bill. Esperanza finished a sentence of six years in prison.
Both of them are waiting for the president of Mexico to grant them clemency.
Fulano's comment: OK, how many of you Gringos out there can recognize counterfeit Mexican money? Well, it doesn't matter anyway, ignorance is no excuse in Mexico.
