Mexican President Peña Nieto (L) and Cuba's Fidel Castro (Presidency of the Republic of Mexico)

HAVANA, Cuba – Following a thaw in the freeze in relations between Cuba and Mexico, the new diplomacy between the two Latin American nations seems to have reached new heights as the current Mexican leader met with Cuba’s most famed revolutionary.

Peña Nieto reunited with both Castro brothers, current President Raúl and former leader Fidel, at the Summit of the Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC) or the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, held this week in Havana.

The Mexican leader posed for pictures as he shook hands with the Castros. It was a sight to behold for many in the region, especially for Peña Nieto who was born when Fidel Castro had already been in power for seven years.

After the summit had wrapped, the Mexican continued his official state visit on behalf of the world’s largest Spanish-speaking country, the first time the 47-year-old has made a visit to Cuba since taking power in 2012.

Following the 50-minute meeting that Mexico’s head of state called “very emotional,” Peña Nieto’s personal blog on the governmental website described the reunion as a “new page in history.”
