MEXICO CITY - The government of the central Mexican state of Morelos has unveiled an all-female police investigative unit created to probe crimes against women.
Morelos Gov. Graco Ramirez swore in and presented the 26 members of the unit, which is made up of women trained to investigate and solve crimes on the basis of forensic evidence, during a ceremony last week.
He said the creation of the unit was part of his administration's overall commitment to gender equality in its public policy decision-making.
"Criminal investigation doesn't require physicality, cowboy boots and belt buckles, blue jeans and leather vests. That image is simply to frighten, to beat people up. It's not for investigating," the governor said.
He added that the unit would be equipped with ballistics and forensic labs.
