MAZATLAN - The number of shrimp boats hijacked during the 2013-2014 season rose to 13 when masked men hijacked the shrimp boat Propemex A45A earlier this week.
The Propemex A45, which is affiliated with the National Chamber of the Fishing and Aquaculture Industries (CANAINPESCA) had returned to its Mazatlán dock at Alfredo Bonfil at 6:30 pm Tuesday after a shrimping trip and was scheduled to offload its catch at 7:00am Wednesday morning. However, at about 1:30am Wednesday the caretaker of the vessel and his wife, who were on the boat, were surprised by masked gunmen.
The hijackers arrived by lancha the caretaker said and estimated there were 7-8 gunmen.
It took 10 minutes for the hijackers to get away with about 800 kilos (1,764 pounds) of shrimp having an estimated value of 200,000 pesos ($15,600).
