Ricardo Michel Luna, President of the Union of Ship Owners, said that during the 2013-2014 shrimp season 12 shrimp boats have been hijacked with over 3 million pesos ($234,000) worth of shrimp taken from the vessels.

He said hijacking a shrimp boat is easier than robbing a bank and the crime is committed with total impunity.

Ricardo Michel said the latest hijacking occurred on Monday, January 13th, when the shrimp boat Chinese I was boarded by pirates.
