A Quintana Roo state government press release says that Gov. Roberto Borge Angulo’s administration will work in conjunction with federal authorities to implement the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Management Program in the Lázaro Cárdenas municipality in 2014.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Raúl González Castilla said that this protected land is part of an important migration route for more than 30 species of land birds.

González Castilla said that the birds cross the Gulf of Mexico from the south of the U.S. to the north of the Yucatán Peninsula, which is the first rest stop on solid ground that they reach.

He added that the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protected Area is home to wetlands, medium growth jungle, savannah and both terrestrial and aquatic species which are endangered or at risk of becoming extinct. For this reason, he said, there is an immediate need to protect this area.
