"Take two and call me in the morning."
This is the advice doctors around the world give to patients every day. The "two" they’re telling us to take are aspirin, the most widely used drug in the world. For more than 3,500 years, people have taken aspirin to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation. In recent years, doctors have come to recognize its role in also preventing heart attacks and strokes.
There's evidence that aspirin can protect you against cancer. It's also prescribed long-term to help prevent further heart attacks, ischemic strokes, and blood clots in people at high risk.
In 2021, a major review changed recommendations for aspirin, saying that some (or all) of its long-believed benefits may not be accurate. For that reason, we recommend talking to your primary care provider before you start taking aspirin on a regular basis.
If you do start it, remember that you must take it consistently - don't skip doses. Also be sure to drink 1/2 glass (4 ounces) of warm water first, then take it with another 4 ounces of warm water to dissolve and help prevent stomach irritation.
If you're thinking of starting to take aspirin regularly, check with your doctor now to see if it's advisable for you, since some people should not take it. That way, if and when you decide to start, you'll be good to go.
