A new research revealed that persons who ate avocados on a daily basis had a reduced risk of heart disease than those who avoided the popular fruit. When fat-containing foods like butter, cheese, and processed meats are substituted with avocado, such as on toast or in guacamole, the risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced.
In a press statement, main research author Lorena S. Pacheco said that the findings show that consuming plant-based unsaturated fats may enhance diet quality and help avoid cardiovascular disease.
An avocado's dietary fiber and monounsaturated fat have been related to cardiovascular health benefits. They've been found in prior studies to be effective in lowering total cholesterol.
For 68,786 women, ages 30 to 55, in the Nurses Health Study, and 41,701 men, ages 40 to 75, in the Health Professionals Follow-Up study, researchers used dietary questionnaires to quantify weekly avocado intake. Heart disease occurrences and strokes were studied over a period of 30 years by the researchers.
Consumption of avocados was associated with a 16% reduction in cardiovascular disease and a 21% reduction in coronary heart disease.
