1 - Her name - The first thing you should know about Puerto Vallarta is that this lovely city has not always had this pretty name. The original village was called Las Penas and it´s main inhabitants were crocodiles and iguanas. Her final name was granted in 1918 by congress and Puerto Vallarta became a municipality in honor of Jaliscos Governor of State, Don Ignacio L. Vallarta.
2 - The population – The continuing growth of Puerto Vallarta is one of the fasting growing cities in Mexico. In the past 20 years, its population has increased to 7.56% annually. In 1880, Puerto Vallarta had an approximate total of 1,500 persons and during the last official census in 2010 Puerto Vallarta totaled 255, 725 inhabitants and today is estimated at just over 300,000!
3 - Yearly Income - With more than $8.766 million pesos in annual revenue it is not a secret that the main economic source of the city is tourism but that has not always been the case. At the beginning of the last century, the port lived from fishing and agriculture. Bananas, corn, beans and coconuts were profitably grown for export and sale within the country.
4 - Enormous Bay - The next thing you should know about Puerto Vallarta is that its bay, the Bay of Banderas measures 42 kilometers from point to point. It is one of the deepest bays in the world (up to 900 meters deep)...
