Featured Feline: Abigail

Abigail at four weeks

A mama cat and litter of three were found in an electrical box behind Plaza Marina by a security guard.

Abigail and her sisters Abby and Amber now have a safe place in our maternity room with Mama Angelina. A kitten should stay with its mother for an absolute minimum of eight weeks and preferably 12 weeks. Although they may be “weaned” prior to eight weeks, they will still have the occasional need to nurse. Kittens taken from their momcats before this time often develop nursing behavior on themselves, other cats, humans, or fabric, and these habits will often continue throughout adulthood.

The mother’s milk is also very important for the kittens’ nutrition and proper growth. This milk transfers antibodies to the kittens, which helps protect them against infectious disease.

Every year we receive litters of tiny kittens who have been taken from their mother, probably by some well-meaning person, and despite our best efforts, a good many of them will not survive.

Abigail is a lucky little girl and should be ready for adoption in time for the Holidays! Meow!

Adoption Update: Dave, King of Bankview!

Dave at home in Calgary….all grown up!

In the Spring of 2013 the Purr nursery was overwhelmed with over 40 rescue kittens and Dave was one of them.

He was named Calvin then, and along with his sister Coco, was found under a car on a busy road in Vallarta.

Little Calvin was full of personality and proved to be so photogenic that we saved a lot of his baby pictures.

Both kitties thrived and were adopted in July of 2013 at Plaza Marina.

Calvin went off to Calgary, Alberta, to live with Barry Hiebert.

This year we contacted Barry and his girlfriend Dawn Loucks about using his photo in the PuRR 2015 Calendar. They were thrilled when he made the cut as Mr. March and we were thrilled to hear the happy story of his life in Canada.

He was renamed “Dave” and Dawn says he is one of the most special cats ever! He skateboards, goes on walks with them and now is the king of Barry’s neighborhood, Bankview.

He is one of the many great PuRR adoption stories you can read about in our 2015 calendar. 100% of the proceeds from the calendar sales goes to support the shelter. You can get yours at the first Kitty Bingo at Los Arcos Hotel on Olas Atlas starting Wednesday, Nov. 5th. Or contact us at info@purrproject.com to have one mailed to your home.

Ongoing Events: Ranch Tours

Cooper with his Virtual Mom, Pat

We are pleased to announce that official tours to visit the PuRR Project shelter will begin again in November.

More information on specific days & meeting location will be made public very soon.

If you plan to be in the Puerto Vallarta area this winter and would like to participate, contact our Cat Tour Leader, Pam Sullivan at toursoftexas@hotmail.com to make a reservation.

Our newest volunteer, Pat Brumfield, visited the shelter for the first time last month and spent time with all the kitties in our nursery. But what REALLY put a big smile on her face was the greeting by all the yard cats!!

She was especially taken by two big orange males who followed her everywhere and vied for her attention.

She decided on the spot to “Virtually Adopt” Cooper….and then Boomer crawled up on her shoulder and nuzzled her hair….so how to choose? She just chose BOTH!

For only $120 a year, you can also be a “Virtual” parent to one of our deserving adult cats. Click on this link for more information and photos of candidates: Virtual Adoption.

Gracias! Thanks! Merci!

Thanks to all.

A very special thanks to Terri & Gray Levi for their recent generous donation from their charitable fund.

Also Thanks to Pam & Milt Tanora, Diane Zarse, Ed & June Gamble, Gary Phillips and the “Anonymous” donors who financed needed repairs to the nursery.

This month we are attempting to repair much of the outdated electrical system to the main house, clinic & bodega. Age & corrosion from the tropical climate have taken their toll and it is something that is no longer safe to postpone.

Remember, tax exempt receipts for US Dollar donations deposited in the US are NOW available. For more information on ways to donate, go to DONATE.
