The economy of the state of Nayarit has been reactivated due to good shrimp catches and commercial sizes placed on the domestic market after the ban on shellfish has been lifted in lagoon systems, bays and estuaries.
The president of the Fishing Industry Cooperative Firm Federation in the northern zone of the state of Nayarit, José Cecilio Rendón Mora, from the start of the fishing season, on 5 September, have achieved good production levels that are better than in 2013, in quantity and quality.
Rendón Mora represents 10 cooperatives operating in the fishing fields in the area of Pancho Villa, Pescadero, San Miguelito, Llano del Tigre, Los Laureles and Zomatlán, among others.
"In the region of Tecuala, there are cooperatives such as Rio Viejo, which these days are having daily catches from 1,000 to 1,500 kilograms while in the previous production ones production was low," he added.
The official commented that although the season started very well, it was not the case in all fields. "There are differences, as in the region of Las Haciendas, Puerta de Palapos, Santa Cruz and San Andrés, where a great number of shrimp is fished, but in small sizes."
In the fishing area San Miguelito, meanwhile, "shrimp being 10 to 12 grams is being caught, which is very good commercial size", the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) reported.
A large biomass of juvenile shrimp from four to five grams was detected in the traditional areas of shrimp production, near Agua Brava System, which are fed through the mouth of Canal de Cuautla, area irrigated by the San Pedro River, of the streams of the Bejuco, Rosa Morada and San Francisco, through the mouth of the river Acaponeta and of the Las Cañas river in the north zone Nayarita on the border with Sinaloa, the Commission added.
Rendón Mora noted that this fishing season offers "relief for the people" because "in Nayarit the problem is that there is only one agricultural harvest a year due to lack of irrigation canals."
Furthermore, Vicente Alzate Avila, head of CONAPESCA sub-delegation in Nayarit, pointed out the good catches are the result of the implementation of federal resources in the area for the support and monitoring programme, and for infrastructure and dredging works.
For example, six of the fisheries production cooperatives were supported by the Commission, which contributed with more than MXN 100,000 (USD 7,540) each to support inspection and supervision during the closed season.
According to the available data, in the first week of capture 520 tonnes of shrimp have good size and price in the region of Tuxpan, Rosamorada, Santiago and lagoon La Pesca.
In Nayarit there are 36 registered fishing cooperatives, which operate 2,958 river vessels.
In this state some 3,600 tonnes of wild shrimp are produced, which added to aquaculture or farm production, totalled about 9,000 tonnes annually.
