Xóchitl Gálvez is one of the two leading candidates for president in Mexico. While polls indicate she’s unlikely to win, Gálvez is making waves for demanding the U.S. send money to Mexico to support migrants passing through the country.

She says Mexico has turned into “the third country” for people heading to the U.S.

“Mexico is taking care of migrants in exchange for nothing,” said Gálvez. “Migrants are being supported by civic groups, religious groups and non-profits.”

She made these comments earlier this week while campaigning in Tijuana.

“If we’re going to continue on this path, there needs to be money, there needs to be resources and attention paid to this issue,” she said. “Right now, these migrants are living in violent conditions where their human rights aren’t respected.”

Gálvez believes funding from the U.S. government would lead to more support and services for the migrants traversing through Mexico on their way to the U.S.

The presidential candidate stated she would demand money from the U.S. should she win the election on June 2.

“When I sit down to negotiate with Biden or Trump, whoever is president, we’re going to negotiate resources for the migrants who are waiting for their humanitarian visas as we look for a solution to this migration of millions of migrants headed to the United States,” Gálvez stated.
