The new reforms on the Mexico City Criminal Code includes suspensions from five to 15 years from public service positions (Canberra Times)

Israel Betanzos, coordinator of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) at the Legislative Assembly of Mexico City (ALDF), stated that new reforms to the Criminal Code will hinder corrupt practices in public service.

Betanzos said that corruption is one of the biggest problems people of Mexico City have to face. He added that corruption creates a feeling of distrust towards public servants when the latter behave in ways opposite to the law and in benefit of their own interests.

According to Betanzos Cortés sanctions set to fight corruption are insufficient, and that bribery and corruption have taken over the social, political and economic arenas. This situation creates an environment of inequality and obstructs competence.

The new reforms on the Mexico City Criminal Code set forth by the Commission on Administration and Procurement of Justice of the ALDF feature suspensions from five to 15 years from public service positions to the person who demands undue contributions for themselves or for someone else. These steps will allow the termination of “loyalty payments” in certain political institutions.

The reforms will be submitted to the Plenary Session in the coming days.
