Farmworkers who have have been protesting semi-slave conditions in San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico are calling for support to guarantee a living, or dignified, and an end to labor abuses.
The workers from the San Quintin Valley, in Baja California, Mexico launched the call in the Mexican capital last month, which will target the international produce companies that operate throughout Mexico.
Dubbed “Global Action for San Quintin”, spokesmen of the more than 30,000 farmworkers in San Quintin, along with other social organizations, musicians, and actors made a call to the international community to support their struggle.
The organizations call for a boycott of the companies who export the produce the farmworkers pick, mainly the United States.
Music producer Rafael Aparicio, said that two international cultural tours will be organized; one through Europe and one in the US.
“We will organize a tour through the US with concerts and meetings with the Latino community so as to inform them of the inhumane conditions in which farm workers are working and so that people will boycott the products of these companies that are exploiting the Mexican workers of San Quintin,” Aparicio explained.
Representative, Bonifacio Diaz argues that the conditions in the fields have returned to the country's colonial period, with workdays lasting more than 15 hours a day. “Our great politicians say Mexico is transforming, Mexico is in movement, but I think Mexico is moving backwards, to before 1810,” said the farmworkers and spokesman.
