Electoral Institute Will Finally Issue Voting IDs to Mexican Citizens Living Abroad teleSUR

The National Electoral Institute, Mexico's electoral authority, announced that it will start to issue voter identification cards to Mexican living outside the country in order to facilitate voting for the 2018 election.

"This is a historic moment, which will involve a radical change in the operation of the Mexican electoral system," said Lorenzo Cordova, president of the authority.    

Cordova is currently on a brief tour of U.S. cities with a high Mexican population to promote the upcoming changes.

The credentials, which are mandatory for Mexicans to exercise their right to vote, will first be issued in 16 consulates throughout the United States, starting on February 8, growing to 22 consulates by March.

The National Electoral Institute, known as INE, expects all consulates in the United States will be able to issue the ID cards by April.

The emphasis on the United States is driven by the fact that, according to the INE, most of the eligible Mexicans living abroad live in the United States.    

Consulates in Canada, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Colombia, and Germany will be able to issue the cards in June.    

All Mexican consulates throughout the world are expected to be able to issue the IDs by August 2016.
