The popular sea-side city of Playa del Carmen is being hailed a tourist phenomenon after official figures from the 2015 season were released.
According to information from the Municipal Public Security Bureau of Solidarity, over the summer holiday season, the city saw more than 20,000 visitors per day, particularly along Fifth Avenue, making it one of the busiest thoroughfares in Mexico.
Mauro Amati Vecci, president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry and Seasoned Foods in the municipality of Benito Juarez, said that “Fifth Avenue has it become an icon of business in an area dominated by all-inclusive, which is supposed to prevent tourists from leaving their hotels,” he said.
For most all-inclusive service providers, tourists can get everything they need at their hotels, including food, beverages, fine wine and high-end clothing. However the appeal of Fifth Avenue with its endless array of shops, restaurants and cafes, has proven irresistible.
